Hong Kong Cycling Routes Collection – FoTan to Old Frontier
The fourth of the series is “FoTan to the Old Frontier at Lo Wu“.
This is an extension of the FoTan to Sheung Shui cycling route. A visit to the old Hong Kong Frontier before the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China,

This is also my seventh ride of the 2018 Cycle Life Challenge that took place on 22 April 2018.
Actual Ride
This is my first group ride after coming back from Kaohsiung. Weather condition was excellent with plenty of sunshine. In fact, it was so good that I got tanned once again.
As said before, the route from FoTan to Lo Wu is actually an extension from Sheung Shui. Instead of repeating the overlapping information again and again, I will focus on the additional portion from Sheung Shui to Lo Wu. The group started riding in the morning and arrived at Sheung Shui by noon for lunch. Same village canteen and my favourite dish again. I must confess I’m a boring guy and my wife will definitely agree on this.
Continued with our journey at Sheung Shui, we rode along the bike path along the Po Shek Wu Road and the Choi Yuen Road.
Our destination Lo Wu was one of the control points for the old frontier between Hong Kong and the Mainland China. With the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China, Hong Kong is now part of China and the frontier ceased to exist.
Before reaching Lo Wu that is at the end of the Ng Tung River (梧桐河) , we have to ride along two another two rivers that are tributaries of the Ng Tung River, namely, the Shek Sheung River (石上河) and the Sheung Yue River (雙魚河).
Ng Tung River is part of the Shenzhen River (深圳河) and is located in Hong Kong. It extends across northern part of the New Territories.
With the severe damages caused by flooding during the typhoon season (July and August) in the ’90s, Ng Tung River, Sheung Yue River and Shek Sheung Rivers had been straightened and widen under the government’s Rural Drainage Rehabilitation Scheme in early 2000. As a result, these natural rivers now become artificial drainage.
At the end of the Choi Yuen Road, we reached the entrance to the maintenance path of the drainage.
Shortly after another two Kilometers along the rivers, we arrived at the maintenance gate of the Ng Tung River drainage.

By the way, I found that the GPS chip in my Wahoo Elemnt bike computer had some strange recordings in some of my recent rides. You may observe that I have ridden on the sea at some part of the return trip.
